This was a well-executed piece, but not really a video… more of a ‘power point’ type presentation. Video would involve moving images, though it did have a few powerful photos I noted. The message is subtle, and as a producer myself, I feel that words and narration do more to relate and get a message across. Many do not watch a video or slide presentation… their mind wanders, but audio is hard to ignore! Just hearing a message brings images to mind, whether real or from memory. Too many images confuse and dilute the message. The one thing to remember is to be effective, and when it’s over, ask yourself… ‘what did we say here?’ What does the presentation ask or how does it motivate? If it does not do either, it may be ineffective… just someone’s work and effectual as they saw it or as an effort they made.
I find that podcasts and narrative presentations are very difficult to ignore as they involve more senses and involvement. If the viewer-listener can drift away mentally, they may… but more often than not, at least a portion of the message gets through.
At the end of a presentation, ask yourself… did it inspire or motivate in a way that will benefit? Will it lead to something happening that is good? If it just entertains, that is Hollywood. However, dealing with endangered species and biodiversity, special effects will not motivate nor inspire!
Sometimes more hard core communication is required to hit home and drive the message. If it requires an action or an answer, it has done the job or at least helped to get the job started. Many hands are necessary before any project reaches completion. Teamwork and community involvement, as mentioned, are keys to keeping our environment and the life it sustains in balance and in harmony as they must be. Our future depends on this.
